The Online MBSR Course

8-week course in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction
Learn tools to significantly improve health and well-being.
All from the comfort of your own home.
Self-directed or teacher-led formats available.

Our online courses are based on the MBSR course developed by the Centre for Mindfulness at UMASS Medical School. It is suitable for anyone who would like to complete an MBSR program but is unable for whatever reason to attend an in-person course.

The 8-week course is available in 3 formats.

Format 1: Self-Guided Learning
Format 2: Self-Guided Learning with live weekly group classes.
Format 3: Self-Guided Learning with live weekly individual classes.

For all our online courses participants receive access to video and written resources for each week of the program. And for the teacher led programs (Format 2 + 3) there are either weekly group or individual meetings online using video conferencing. Participants can engage with the teacher through their computer during this class time. For format 2 courses participants can also interact with other participants during class time and for home practice.

The course is challenging and life affirming and requires a clear commitment to complete the 8 modules, the one day online retreat and daily practice. This means during 8 weeks putting aside 2.5hrs each week to go through course materials and then 1 hour per day, six days a week for practice.

A computer and high-speed internet connection are required. Mobile devices such as phones and tablets are not recommended.

What is Mindfulness Meditation?

Mindfulness is the practice of cultivating non-judgmental moment-to-moment awareness in day-to-day life. Mindfulness develops the potential to experience each moment, no matter how difficult or intense, with greater serenity and clarity. Learning how to be more present, more relaxed can help one feel better, sleep better, increase ability to cope with stressful situations, improve self esteem and renew powerful inner resources for healing.

What is MBSR?

Mindfulness based Stress Reduction was pioneered by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D. , assisted by Saki Santorelli, Ph.D. and colleagues in 1979, at the University of Massachusetts Medical Centre. In 1993, Bill Moyers featured Jon Kabat-Zinn’s Stress Reduction Clinic in his series “Healing and the Mind”. A great wave began as many health care professionals wanted to model similar programs. Currently there are over 240 medical centres in the U.S. that have Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction programs. MBSR has also expanded internationally; there are programs in most continents. In the U.S. it is recognized by most health insurance carriers and is integrated into the UK health service. MBSR programs are also found in business settings, in training for educators and in professional sports.

This program has improved thousands of participant’s ability to live and cope with chronic pain, illness, stress related conditions, and the stresses of everyday life. By learning to actively participate in the management of health and well being, many participants report they are better able to manage stress, fear, anger, anxiety and depression both at home and in the workplace. Participants have stated that they feel less judgmental and critical of themselves and subsequently of others. Many also report a decrease of the frequency and length of medical visits to hospitals, emergency rooms and health care professional offices. There has also been a noticeable decrease in the use of prescription and non-prescription medication.

Format 2: Self-guided Learning with ‘live’ group classroom sessions €250

  • 8 course modules that teach the key components of MBSR over 8 weeks. These modules include downloadable video and audio resources.
  • MBSR Course Workbook in PDF Format.
  • Self-guided Retreat – Mindfulness Day video module.
  • 8 live group classroom sessions. Each week participants meet Timothy online via Zoom for a 1.5hr class to review that week’s practice &  answer any questions that are arising. A video recording of the call is available to download 24hrs later.

Format 3: One-to-One Tuition €400

  • 8 course modules that teach the key components of MBSR over 8 weeks. These modules include downloadable video and audio resources.
  • MBSR Course Workbook in PDF Format.
  • Self-guided Retreat – Mindfulness Day video module.
  • 8 live individual classroom sessions. Each week participants join Timothy on Skype for a 1 hour one-to-one session to review that week’s module.

  • This format may be particularly suitable for trainee MBSR teachers who would like mentorship around teaching the MBSR curriculum.

When you register for a course you will create a username and password that will allow you to access course materials.

The course is divided into 8 modules. Once you have registered for the course, one module will be released each week for you to focus on. Each module contains a chapter of the course workbook, audio recordings and a video library for that week. As you work your way through the workbook, it will be indicated when to watch the next video or listen to an audio recording.

Depending on the course format you choose, it may also be possible to participate in a weekly online class.

If you follow the course for the eight weeks and are committed to a daily practice, the impact can be profound. It can be similar to doing an onsite course, if the same dedication to practice is there.

The program is delivered by Timothy Sweeney who has over 40 years meditation experience and over 13 years experience teaching the MBSR program. The written & video course materials were produced & edited by his wife Roisin Maoilearca Sweeney.

You will need to have a computer and an internet connection with a relatively fast speed that allows you to watch video.

The 8 week MBSR online course is available in three different formats. With the self-guided formats, you can start the course at any time with content being released gradually over 8 weeks.

For formats where there is a live, online teaching component, there is a specific start and finish date. If you are unable to participate, classes are also recorded and are available to download.

It is highly recommended to complete the course over 8 weeks, but you are free to work at your own pace.

One possibility is to meet each week as a group and review the course materials for that week together. This can be a great way to do an online course as it offers support for practice through discussion and sharing of experiences and understanding.

We ask participants not to share course materials with other people who haven’t registered for the course themselves. This is to protect our livelihood and allow us to continue doing the work we love to do.
