What is MBSR?

The Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Program is an intensive eight-week evidence based program to empower participants to take an active role in the management of their health and wellbeing. During the course participants learn to cultivate life-long tools to maximize wellness, even when facing stress, illness and pain. The program was developed by the Center for Mindfulness at UMASS Medical School and is supported by over 35 years of clinical research.

The highly participatory practical course includes:

  • Guided Instruction in Mindfulness Meditation

  • Gentle stretching, movement and mindful yoga

  • Inquiry exercises promoting awareness in everyday life

  • Daily home practices.

  • Three home practice CDs and a course handbook.

What is the course schedule and time commitment?

In-Person MBSR

Heart of Mindfulness currently offers in-person courses in Limerick at Milford Care Centre (see below for upcoming courses). In this format participants meet for 8 weekly classes of 2.5 hrs and there is an all-day session in the sixth week usually on a Saturday or Sunday. During the 8 weeks participants are asked to practice mindfulness meditation and/or mindful movement for 45-60 minutes a day.

Online MBSR

The MBSR course is also available in an online format. Participants usually schedule 2.5 hrs weekly for self-directed learning using written and video resources and a convenient day to follow an online all-day session of mindfulness in the sixth week. During the 8 weeks participants are also asked to practice mindfulness meditation and/or mindful movement for 45-60 minutes a day.

Benefits of MBSR

The research indicates that MBSR training can be of significant therapeutic benefit for a wide range of emotional, physical and medical issues including the following:

  • Stress – Job – Family – Relationships – Financial

  • Depression – Anxiety – Fear – Worry

  • ADD – Cancer – Heart Disease – Diabetes – Psoriasis

  • Burnout – Fatigue – Irritability – Post Traumatic Stress

  • Chronic Pain – Fibromyalgia – Rheumatoid arthritis

  • Emotional Pain – Sleep disorders – Eating disorders

  • Bereavement

Through the process of cultivating moment-to-moment awareness you can learn skills to assist you with the pain, stress and difficulties that are a natural part of life. In addition, participants often report feeling more alive, more “in-tune” with themselves and others.

The course is challenging and life affirming. It enables participants to face and open up to whatever difficulties arise in life, with careful attention, kindness and a sense of possibility that arise through responding rather than reacting to experience. Mindfulness offers the potential to live life with more ease, less fear, less anxiety, less resistance and to connect with the present with a soft and open heart.
